TK Whitaker, Gerard Sweetman and Sean Lemass some of the makers of modern Ireland

On tomorrow night RTE is running a programme titled Lemass: The Man who Made Modern Ireland.

The title of the programme is misleading.
In 1950 Fine Gael Minister for Industry and Commerce Dan Morrissey established the IDA -The Industrial Development Authority. Sean Lemass in opposition pledged to abolish the IDA if returned to power. FF on return to power in 1951 did not abolish the IDA. The IDA has played a major role in the development of Irish industry.
FF remained in power from 1951- 1954.

In 1954 Fine Gael, Labour, and Clann na Talmhan took office. FG TD Gerard Sweetman was appointed Minister for Finance.
That government inherited an economic mess. Unemployment stood at 421,000 whilst over 100,000 people had left agriculture during the previous 8 years. Sweetman strongly opposed the protectionist policies of FF and took very hard decisions. Sweetman believed that Ireland could grow its economy on the basis off booming exports. In his budget in 1955, he introduced a radical -for the time-scheme whereby a tax exemption was provided for exported goods. He also established the prize bonds scheme as a means of covering the national debt. In 1956 he plucked civil servant TK Whitaker from relative obscurity in the Civil Service and appointed him Secretary General of the Department of Finance. This raised quite a few eyebrows but the decision was a mark of Sweetman's greatness.

The incoming FF government benefited from Sweetman's decisions and indeed the work of Dan Morrissey in establishing the IDA in 1950.
TK Whitaker was the brainchild behind the First Programme for Economic Expansion, which played a major role in Irelands economic development in the 1960s. It is to the credit of Sean Lemass and a mark of his greatness that he accepted Whitaker's proposals and supported free trade policies espoused by Gerard Sweetman and T K Whitaker. In fact Lemass was now advocating policies diametrically opposed to those pursued by FF in power since the 1930. Certainly Sean Lemass was one of the makers of modern Ireland. But so also were Gerard Sweetman and T K Whitaker amongst others. It is important to realise that without the work of Sweetman and Whitaker, Lemass would have achieved little.

Iran:Tehran-Police brutality exposed in letter from “Rasul Akram” hospital

Police Brutality in Iran exposed

This comes from Revolutionary Road

Date: Wednesday 24th June 2009.
The following email in Farsi we received today (Wednesday 24th june). It is written by a doctor from “Rasul Akram” hospital in Tehran who says that some people were killed not only by one bullet as they found two or three bullets in some bodies, close to one another, showing that shooters used barrage shooting against people and not only a single shot. A 68 year old man had 3 bullets in his body, two on his left shoulder and one in the left side of his stomach.

The doctors of the “Rasul Akram”hospital say they had been faced with 38 people killed during last week’s protests. Apparently, police took the corpse of the dead bodies out from the hospital and carried them away by truck. Most of their families still do not know if their children have been killed. Besides, among the corpse there were some 15, 16 years old kids. According to the email, the crew of the hospital protested in the street next to the hospital giving out the information about the violence to the people. The photos attached are from this demonstration which appears to have taken place earlier this week.

Iran: Video and Text-Neda's sister speaks out in a moving eulogy

Translation

I am here in order to tell you that she died in her father's arms.

I am here in order to tell you that my sister had big dreams.

I am here in order to tell you that my sister was very modest [in her dreams].

She longed - just like me - after one day feeling the wind in her hair, and just like me she loved poems by Farukh (?), a Persian poet, and she....

....longed for freedom and equality.

She longed after one day being able to say I am Iranian; with her head held up high.

She longed after one day falling in love with a man with a [inaudible] haircut, giving birth to a daughter, singing lullabies at her cradle, or to plait her child's long hair.

My sister died because she was not allowed to live like a human being; my sister died because injustice would not end; my sister died because she loved life so much, and my sister died because she cared lovingly for her fellow humans well-being.

All our brothers and sisters in Iran: You are not alone!

Iran: Neda posters pulled down by state officials according to the Telegraph newspaper

Iranian security officials have begun pulling down posters of Neda Agha Soltan, the young woman who has become the face of the country's pro-democracy uprising after her death in Tehran was captured on video.

Relatives said images of Neda Agha Soltan, 27, who has been described as Iran's "Angel of Freedom" after she was apparently shot dead on Saturday, had been targeted by plain-clothed officials.
They had removed any material commemorating the 27-year-old student that had been erected near her home by sympathisers in the Iranian capital. Read full story Here.

Iran Video:Young Lady shot dead in Tehran by Basiji revolutionary guards 20/6/09

The video and following report from iroom via IReport.com
Basij shots to death a young woman in Tehran's Saturday June 20th protests At 19:05 June 20th Place: Karekar Ave., at the corner crossing Khosravi St. and Salehi st. A young woman- Neda Agha Soltan- who was standing aside with her father watching the protests was shot by a basij member hiding on the rooftop of a civilian house. He had clear shot at the girl and could not miss her. However, he aimed straight her heart. I am a doctor, so I rushed to try to save her. But the impact of the gunshot was so fierce that the bullet had blasted inside the victim's chest, and she died in less than 2 minutes. The protests were going on about 1 kilometers away in the main street and some of the protesting crowd were running from tear gass used among them, towards Salehi St. The film is shot by my friend who was standing beside me. Please let the world know.

Neda Agha Soltan was born in 1982 and was a philosophy student.

Video: Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei backs Ahmadinejad against protestors

Civil War ?

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has demanded an end to street protests over Iran's disputed presidential election. He has come down firmly on the side of Ahmadinejad. He sounds like a man out of touch with the reality on the ground. He warned
"If there is any bloodshed, leaders of the protests will be held directly responsible,"
His speech offers little hope for an immediate resolution of the dispute. He has seriously misread the mood on the ground. The pro Mousavi supporters are unlikely to be mollified by lectures. There is now grave danger that Iran could plunge into a civil war which will benefit neither Iranians nor the world.

Video:Rep. Michele Bachmann speech in Congress against taxpayer funding for abortion in DC

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) in a very moving speech-the finest that I have ever heard from a public representative-outlines the pro-life women's perspective on growing public support for the pro-life cause and the true impact of taxpayer funding for abortion in DC. President Obama has proposed repealing the Dornan Amendment, legislation that currently prevents taxpayer funded abortion in the District of Columbia. Taxpayer funded abortion increases the abortion rates in all ethnic groups but more so among the African American and Hispanic communities. Rep Bachmann explains how American children and women are hurt by abortion.
It is already a great tragedy that the District of Columbia has the highest abortion rate in the country. What's even worse is forcing pro-life taxpayers to foot the bill for over 7,200 abortions a year in D.C.

Congresswomen like Jean Schmidt (R-OH), Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Kathy Dahlkemper (D-PA), Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) are leading the fight in Congress against taxpayer-funded abortions in D.C.

Video: Sarah Palin demolishes Letterman on Today Show with Matt Lauer

This is vintage Sarah Palin as she demolishes Letterman's half baked excuses. The video was uploaded by a leftist anti Palin group. It actually vindicates Palin.

Excerpt of Interview:

Sarah Palin: ..... I found out later about the comment that was made about the statutory rape of my 14 year-old daughter Willow knowing that crossed the line and then others chiming in on other comments that Letterman made. It's a sad commentary of our culture and society to chuckle and laugh through comments such as he made the other night. I think it is quite unfortunate.

Matt Lauer: Since David Letterman is not here let me just say that he did did not mention Willow by name and that he went on to say that he was not referring to your 14 year-old daughter.........

Sarah Palin:I would say that you and anybody else are extremely naive to believe that very convenient excuse of David Letterman's the other day. It took him a couple of days to think of that excuse and 'Uhhh... No, he wasn't talking about my daughter that was there with me at the game, the 14 year-old. He was talking about some other daughter.' Well I think it was a weak excuse and regardless it was a degrading comment about a young woman and I would hope that people would rise up and decide it's not acceptable. No wonder young girls especially have such low self-esteem in America when we think it's funny for a so-called comedian to get away with making a similar remark as he did....

David Letterman said Gov. Sarah Palin bought makeup from Bloomingdale's to update her "slutty flight attendant" look

Video: Sarah Palin answers Letterman ‘slutty flight attendant’ slur

Sarah Palin called David Letterman "pathetic" Tuesday after the CBS Late Show host said the Alaska Republican governor sports a "slutty flight attendant look". Read more at: Politico. No doubt on second thoughts Letterman will surely realise that his comments are in very bad taste. He should have the good grace to withdraw the comments and apologise. It is time for the liberal media to desist from its persecution of Sarah Palin and her family. The witch-hunt must stop.

Fox News Video: Bill O'Reilly Hammers Liberal hypocrisy on George Tiller and Abortion

Bill O'Reilly in his talking points memo exposes liberal hypocrisy on human rights issues. He contrasts liberal reaction to waterboarding of three individuals with the liberal perspective on brutality perpetrated by liberals. He hammers the liberal position on late term abortionist George Tiller. According to the New York Times mass murderer Tiller is a hero. Tiller brutally murdered and tortured 60,000 unborn children. Clearly liberalism is a godless and morally bankrupt philosophy.
This talking points memo is vintage O'Reilly.

Ireland: Green Party faces wipe out in any early General Election

Ireland's Green Party has been wiped out in the local elections. It lost all its seats in Dublin and has just three seats in the rest of the country. In the months prior to the local and Euro elections the party was damaged by the resignations of two councillors, Bronwen Maher (Dublin City Council) and Chris O'Leary (Cork City Council). They were strongly critical of the direction the leadership had taken the party since going into government with Fianna Fail in 2007. This was followed by the resignation of former MEP Patricia McKenna who contested the Euro elections-in Dublin- as an independent and outpolled the official Green candidate Deirdre De Burca.
Deirde De Burca demanded a recount and lost the party further credibility.
Chris O'Leary contested the local elections as an independent and was reelected. Last weeks ugly smear directed at Enda Kenny backfired.

Tonight on RTE defeated Green candidate Niall Ó Brolcháin -from-Galway-mentioned the possibility of crossing the floor and joining FG and Labour in a new government. This suggestion was promptly rubbished by Pat Rabbitte and Phil Hogan who stressed the necessity of a general election to ensure that a new government had a mandate. Quite simply the Greens are caught between a rock and a hard place. Continued participation in government is damaging the party. However if the Greens were to precipitate a general election the party would in all probability lose its full complement of TDs.The Greens would go the way of the PDs.
The Green Party has no option but to remain in government and hope that the tide turns in the next 2-3 years.
Surely Green turkeys will not vote for Christmas.

In this electoral area the number of seats was reduced from 7 to six. One of the outgoing councillors faced the chop. Labour's Teresa Wright lost her seat. Many expected that FGs Pat Nugent would lose out. However he turned in a stunning performance and secured 1214 first preferences. This election has been a great success for FG with the party securing 3,705 (43.7%) first preferences. In addition Damien Geoghegan (FG) topped the poll with 1300 first preferences.

FFs failure to run a candidate from Dungarvan town backfired whilst the strategy of introducing Ollie Wilkinson (resident in Lismore Electoral area) failed to yield an extra seat. Seamus O'Donnell was not nominated by FF and ran as an independent. However he failed to secure election.
